PM Mitchell updated on OECS matters

Ongoing work of the OECS, especially as it relates to the Economic Commission Unit, was among matters discussed when a delegation from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) met with Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell last week Thursday.

The OECS delegation, which visited Grenada, comprised Director General, Len Ishmael; Senior Director, Randolph Cato; and Co-ordinator of the Regional Integration Unit, Elma Gene. The convivial meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office, began with the Director General adorning the Prime Minister with the official OECS pin.

Issues on the agenda included discussions on the implementation of the Economic Treaty and relevant actions required by Grenada; Grenada’s immediate attention regarding Government’s appointments
to vital positions within the organisation; the OECS’ development strategy, tourism policies and free movement of people as well as Economic Citizenship and Alien Land-holding Licensing.

Prime Minister Mitchell was also briefed about the inaug-ural convening of the OECS Parliamentary Assembly, which was held in Antigua on March 26, 2013. The dele-gation also discussed the upcoming meeting of the OECS Authority for Heads of Government of Member States and their delegations, to be held May 15 and 16 in Antigua, as well as the upcoming meeting for all Governor Generals on May 14.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said that both parties reaffirmed their commitment to work together in areas of national and regional importance, as well as a commitment on the part of the Prime Minister to work speedily on all OECS actions required by Grenada, especially as it relates to his political appointments to the Commission and Council.

The Prime Minister, as a new Prime Minister does, is expected to speak at the opening meeting of the OECS Authority in Antigua, in May.
