Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket ‘just nice’ for children of Spice Isle

AS international cricket made a highly successful return to the island of Grenada with the recent One-Day series between West Indies and Zimbabwe, so too did the action-packed Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket playing sessions for young children.

The eager boys and girls from across the Spice Isle participated in the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket display on the outfield at the Grenada National Stadium, accompanied by Chirpy – the larger-than-life, fun-loving mascot.

Smartly attired in their brand new, specially designed “whites” which were supplied by Scotiabank and the West Indies Cricket Board, the aspiring young players showcased their talents and skills much to the delight of the spectators in the stands.

Elie Bendaly, Country Manager – Scotiabank Grenada outlined: “As the new country manager of Scotiabank Grenada and a first timer to the Kiddy Cricket Programme, I am extremely impressed with the commitment and passion of the children, teachers and coaches for the game of cricket. It is only obvious why Scotiabank has supported and continues its partnership with the West Indies Cricket Board, as the game of cricket in my opinion unifies the people of Grenada and the Caribbean.”

His thoughts were echoed by Roland Holder, Manager of Cricket Operations at the WICB. He stated: “The WICB holds the Kiddy Cricket Programme as one of our top cricketing priorities, especially since it forms the starting point of the WICB’s cricket development pathway. Through our long-standing partnership with the Scotiabank, we have been able to extend the programme’s reach and scope throughout the region, exposing more children between the ages of six and 11 to cricket.”

Holder, a former Barbados captain and West Indies batsman, added: “The interval displays continue to serve as the primary vehicle which enables children to experience grand international stadiums and get a feel for being ‘on the world stage’. We hope that children draw inspiration from these long-lasting and impactful experiences and continue to play, develop and build a love for the game.”

Over 75 boys and girls were chosen from among the top eight schools which have excelled in the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket events. Some students came from Crochu Roman Catholic School, champions of this year’s Grenada leg of the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Festival. Others came from Grand Roy Government School; St. Patrick's Anglican School; Hermitage Government School; Samaritan Presbyterian School; Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School; Constantine Methodist School; and Hillsborough Government School.
