New GG to be sworn in on May 7

Grenada’s new Governor General will be taking her oath of office on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 in a ceremony at the Trade Centre.

Current holder of the post, Sir Carlyle Glean, will be ending his duties today, Friday, May 3, and during the four-day transition, the Constitution provides for the President of the Senate to be the Deputy Governor General.

On April 10, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell informed nationals in his first address to the Nation since his New National Party won the February 19 General Elections that businesswoman Dr. Cecile La Grenade was identified as successor to Sir Carlyle Glean.

“With more women in our Parliament than ever before, it is fitting that we will have our first female Governor General,” he told the nation, while explaining that it was fitting that her appointment came at a time when we were paying tribute to the country’s first female governor, Dame Hilda Bynoe, who regrettably passed away recently.

According to tradition, a High Court judge appointed by the OECS Court of Appeal will be administering the Oath of Office to the new Head of State, who represents the Queen of England. (LS)
