Thousands attend Children’s Carnival

Dressed in costumes depicting characters from fairy tales, other cultures, musical instruments or concepts turned carnival representation, children were in the spotlight for Carnival 2013 when they took to parading on the streets of St. George’s last Saturday.

KIDDIES PLAY MAS: SK and Associates Band, which was
the only new entry in this year’s Children’s Carnival, placed
third in the Fancy section. Their pieces illustrated costumes
under the name ‘Kids Imagination Fairy Land’.
The 2013 Children’s Carnival had more than six fancy bands displaying costumes, while there were the traditional sections which included wild Indians and maypole dancers. Thousands of children along with their parents lined the streets then gathered at the National Stadium where they participated in their section of the carnival celebrations, which will conclude on August 13 with a parade of all children and adult bands on the streets.

These children were in fairy land as they paraded
through the streets of St. George’s last Saturday.
The only new entry band was SK and Associates, whose pieces illustrated costumes under the name “Kids Imagination Fairy Land”, which was a labour of love for those who worked behind the scenes. With very little sponsorship, the band placed third in the fancy section. Sharmaly Phillip is the main person behind the band and has been involved in fancy mas since a toddler.

The Kiddies Carnival Band of the Year went to Helen Marie
and Associates, whose band ‘The March Band’
was a reflection of a Drum Corps.
The Kiddies Carnival Band of the Year went to Helen Marie and Associates, whose band “The March Band” was a reflection of a Drum Corps with cheerleaders. The Junior Panorama champion was Republic Bank Angel Harp junior section, while the new Junior Monarch was Filandi Jeffery – the son of reigning national monarch Findley Jeffery.

Upcoming activities for carnival celebrations will be the Soca Monarch competition tonight; Panorama on Saturday night; and on Sunday night, the National Calypso Monarch competition. Jouvert will be on Monday and the cel-ebrations conclude on Tuesday. (LS)
