Dame Cecile to deliver first Throne Speech today

Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade will be making her debut ceremonial throne speech today when Grenada opens the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament at the Trade Centre – the temporary home of Parliament after the passage of Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

Delivering the throne speech is the highlight of a traditional ceremonial event involving the members of both the Lower and Upper Houses, which signals the start of the new parliamentary year. In her speech, Dame Cecile is expected to announce the new and ongoing plans, programmes and projects to be undertaken by the Government during the parliamentary year.

The event, which will include a military display, is expected to be attended by hundreds of Grenadians, including students and members of the Diplomatic Corps. It is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. One of the bills that is expected to get approval in this new parliamentary year is the Grenada Tourism Authority, which provides the legal framework to convert the Grenada Board of Tourism into an Authority.

The first session of the New National Party administration following the February 19 General Elections concluded on August 21, 2013. Following the delivery of the Throne Speech, the next big event for the Parliament will be the presentation of the 2014 Budget, set to take place in early December. (LS)
