GOVERNMENTS across the region are being urged to do their part in helping public servants to benefit from continuous training opportunities, especially those in leadership positions.
This comes from Louise Clement, Minister Counsellor (Development) and Canada’s Director to the Caribbean Development Bank, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). She was in Barbados for the opening of the Caribbean Development Project’s Leadership Development Programme, that was held at the Cave Hill School of Business recently.
Clement maintained that it is important for the region to recognise that the key to sustainability for leaders is to participate in continuous learning opportunities and to address structural and cultural factors that can impede the application of learning.
“We therefore invite Caribbean governments, including Prime Ministers and key Ministers from across the Caribbean to engage in the development of their public servants through the opportunity offered by this programme. This collaboration between Canada and the region targets senior public service officials in the twelve participating countries and key regional organisations which collectively yield the greatest influence in leading the region in achieving economic, social and development goals. It takes new approaches and new thinking to navigate these turbulent times,” she stated.
Clement was followed up by a local expert in leadership, Avril Gollop, former Head of the Civil Service, who further emphasised the importance of government’s role in the development of new leaders through the Leadership Development Programme.
