Waggy T Super Knockout football tournament intensifies


Action in the Waggy T Super Knockout Football Tournament intensifies next weekend with the round of 16, as the 30 teams battle for the Championship prize of EC$34 000. After more than 10 matches, which have seen 35 goals in regulation time and 19 in three penalty shootouts, most of the top 16 teams have emerged.

The preliminaries come to an end this week when Fontenoy United met Happy Hill and Sun Jets tackled North Stars on Thursday, while SGU Knights engage Honved and Queens Park Rangers meet Grand Mal today at the National Stadium.

Real Old Men, Hurricane Youths, Ball Dogs, Combine Northerners, Hard Rock, LIME Paradise, Fetter Boys, Hampshire, Sun Setters and Mt. Moritz, scored first round wins to secure their places in the round of 16. In the latest round of matches last week Sunday, Sun Setters scored an exciting 3-2 win over Five Stars, while Caribbean Colours Kings Cut Barber Shop Mt. Moritz played impressively to stop Bernies Ice Cream St. John’s Sports 2-0.

Two goals by Devner Welsh and strikes by Shammauh Mark and Richardson Etienne, set-up the win for Sun Setters. Steven Williams and Yahumba Simpson were the marksmen for the Mt. Moritz outfit.

GFA Premier League Champions Hard, Combine Northerners and Hurricane Youths have been most
impressive to date, scoring five goals in emphatic wins.

Hard Rock whipped Season Fashion 5-1, Combin Northerners thrashed Cecil Frederick & Associates Performance Sports Club 5-0, while Hurricane Youths stopped Cyril Tyres Birchgrove 5-1.

The leading goal-scorers to date are national player Kimmon Redhead from Hard Rock and Kimmon Warren of Hurricane Youths with hat tricks – three goals each.

They are followed by Jamaly Phillip and Marcio McQueen of Combine Northerners and Denver Welsh of Sun Setters, who have scored two goals each.

Over 700 fans were on hand for the last round of matches last Sunday, which created plenty of excitement and many more are expected for the Round of 16 starting next weekend.
