CTU focusing on public education

AN educated and aware citizenry will lead to a greater and more effec-tive use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) and eventually higher job creation within that sector.

This is the main mission of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) as it outlined its intention to embark on a public awareness and education programme this year.

During the 24th Anniversary Media Day at the Hilton Barbados last Friday evening, Secretary General, Bernadette Lewis, stated that this public awareness campaign would include a Caribbean ICT Roadshow, community outreach activities, youth programmes, innovation and entrepreneurship.

In addition, she said that there would be a focus on educating the public on cyber security and the hosting of a Ministerial ICT strategic seminar.

Lewis pointed out that in 2003, the CTU determined a new strategic plan to address issues of ICTs and due to its proactivity, it was now the primary facilitator for such Caribbean policies and best practices, a major contributor to the development of ICT capacity within the region and the designated advocate for Caribbean ICT positions at international fora.

The CTU was established in 1989 by CARICOM Heads of Government to be the inter-governmental telecommunications policy instrument for the Caribbean. (JMB)
