GPA to assist SVG to develop poultry policy

By Linda Straker
President of the Grenada Poultry Association (GPA), Mr. Garvin Pierre, left the island earlier this week to assist neighbouring St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) with the development of a policy and other strategies that can assist in developing that island’s poultry industry.

According to officials at the GPA, Mr. Pierre was selected based on his expertise in the field and he is expected to work along with the relevant stakeholders in putting a policy together with the main aim of creating a level playing field for both the local producers/suppliers and those who currently import poultry into the country.

The importation of poultry into the islands contribute to a significant food import bill. The aim of the policy will be to increase local demand and at the same time reduce on import.

Grenada is yet to have a policy on poultry, although the association has presented a draft document and Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, who is enthusiastic about the idea, has ordered the Ministry of Agriculture to partner with the association to have the policy developed and finalised.
