Grenada’s 2005 Island Scholar, Ms. Skeeta Chitan, was one of five law students to recently graduate with a certificate of Merit from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago.

A Certificate of Merit is awarded to a student who obtains “A” grades in at least nine of the 11 courses which make up the plan of studies at the law school. The Class of 2012 featured 137 graduates, generally from the southern and eastern Caribbean. The feature address at the graduation ceremony, celebrated on October 6, 2012 at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies, was delivered by Dr. the Hon. Kenny Anthony, Prime Minister of St. Lucia.

Ms. Chitan, who is the newest Associate at the law firm of Derick Sylvester and Associates, also received the Council for Legal Education Prize for Most Outstanding Year II Student; the H. Aubrey Fraser Memorial Prize for best performance in Ethics, Rights and Obligations of the Legal Profession; the Fitzwilliam, Stone, Furness-Smith & Morgan Prize for best performance in Civil Procedure and Practice II; and the Book Specialists Prize as First Outstanding Year II Student.

Prior to entering the two-year Legal Education Certificate Programme at the Hugh Wooding Law School, the former Island Scholar earned her Bachelor of Laws Degree (Hons.) at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

Ms. Chitan is a former student of St. Joseph’s Convent St. George’s and the T.A. Marryshow Community College.
