IT was in the month of October that employees at George F. Huggins & Co. (G’da) Ltd. were happily
enlightened about a Christmas promotion purposefully created solely for them. Contrary to popular opinion, this promotion was not the first of its kind at Huggins and unquestionably has the potential to set a positive trend for other local businesses.

Companies that offer customer-driven promotions, generally emphatically state that employees and their immediate families are not eligible to enter. This remarkable promotion, however, flipped the script by
allowing staff to be the ones at the receiving end.

The grand prize winner, Michael Victor, with
some of the Huggins staff.
The promotion, entitled “Is We Time Now”, was a collaborative initiative between the Distribution Division and some of their gracious suppliers. The list of suppliers included Unilever Trinidad, Angostura, Kimberley Clark, Elle & Vire, Weetabix, Santa Carolina, Universal and SM Jaleel & Company. When approached by the brand managers, these suppliers did not hesitate to play their part. They saw this as a great way to demonstrate their sincere appreciation to employees who are also major customers of their products, but are not allowed to partake in promotions.

The prizes in the promotion were appealing and just in time for the Christmas season. The ideal grand prize was a 30” Stove with a rotisserie and broiler, compliments Unilever Trinidad. The second prize, an eight hundred dollar voucher redeemable at any Huggins department and the third prize was
a 100 lbs Rubis gas and a leg ham. A total of 14 hampers were also up for grabs. The two consolation prizes were dinner for two at the exquisite Coyaba Beach Resort and a one hundred and fifty dollar voucher to be spent at the Port Louis Victory Bar.

The draw was done at the Distribution Division on December 21 in the presence of representatives from the Audit, Corporate Marketing and Human Resource Departments. The two directors who carried out the draws were Mr. Christopher David and Mr. Charles George. Other persons included Mr. Alister Joseph, Manager at the Distribution Division and Mrs. Barbara Fraser, Commercial and Industrial Workers Union’s General Secretary.

According to one of the Brand Managers, Ms. Karlene Williams, there were a total of 511 entries. Distribution Division topped the list for the most entries, followed by Foodland Market Square and Main Office respectively.

After completion of the draw, presentations were made to the fortunate winners in the various departments. The expression of a combination of utter shock mingled with absolute elation shone on the faces of the winning employees. Some exclaimed that this was their first time winning something, while others were simply speechless. One partic-ular young man who was bewildered, when greeted with the wonderful news exclaimed, “Who is that, me?”, while frantically looking around to see if they were talking to someone else. Another said that he was not surprised at all, because he had placed nine entries in the box. Based on the general responses from the winners, one thing is for certain, they were happy to not only have won, but to be employed with a company that provides for their needs.

Kudos and a big thank you to the promotion planning committee at the Huggins Distribution Division, the suppliers and all other persons who made the execution of this promotion a definite success!
