By Linda Straker
Thousands of qualified voters were registered during the last three months of 2012. Thirteen thousand nine hundred is the total amount on the addendum voter’s list that covers the period October to December 2012, which was made public on January 3, 2013.
An official at the Parliamentary Elections Office explained that the 13 900 names also comprise some persons whose names did not appear on the original list, which was published in September, as well as persons who made official complaints to correct addresses, names and other matters.
According to the election rules, persons with complaints will have until today, January 11, 2013 to submit their complaints to the Parliamentary Elections Offices in the various constituencies.
A new consolidated list, which will comprise the names of all persons registered from January to December 2012, is expected to be published soon. There are pres-ently just under 55 000 qualified voters in the island.
In his New Year’s Message, Prime Minister Tillman Thomas said that he is acutely aware of the constitutional provision regarding the holding of General Elections this year. “In accordance with that provision, you will have the opportunity to exercise your democratic right and responsibility.
I urge you all to immediately register, to participate in the process by which you can choose your government,” he said.
“As my administration offers itself for another term in office to serve you, we do so with pride and the full knowledge that no one can point an accusing finger of corruption in our direction. We can be trusted,” he said.
General Elections is constitutionally due in Grenada no later than October 2013.
