Several events to mark 39th Independence celebrations

“Celebrating 39 years of Achievement with Renewed Optimism” is the theme for the Grenada 2013 Independence celebrations, which will climax on February 7 with a military parade and cultural explosion at the National Stadium.

Cabinet has approved EC$500 000 for this year’s celebrations, which are scheduled to start on Saturday, January 26, with the St. Mark Best Village Festival. Throughout the next two weeks, there will be a number of community and parish events which include cricket and football competitions, the Independence Calypso Competition, the Sailing Festival and cultural events.

In accordance with other years, the National Stadium celebration will be held in the evening from 2 p.m.

The event this year is organised jointly by the National Celebrations Committee in partnership with the National Cultural Foundation.

The grand finale event is expected to be a display of all things cultural and thousands are expected to flood the National Stadium not just to see the military parade, but to hear the announcement of those who are recognised through the National Honours Act for outstanding contribution to Grenada, nationally and internationally. (LS)
