Grenada to participate in world swimming championship
A team from the Grenada Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) will depart the island on Saturday to participate in the World Swimming Championship in Turkey.
The National Team of three swimmers and a National Coach will be travelling to Istanbul, Turkey to compete in FINA World Short Course Swimming Championship (25m) December 12-16 2012.
A statement from GASA said that the Team is in good spirits and are expecting to do very well. They are prepared to do their best. The lone female swimmer is, National Recorder holder, OECS Recorder breaker and age group trophy winner, Carifta gold and silver medalist, CISC gold and silver medalist, CCCAN finalist Oreoluwa Cherebin. She will compete in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m and 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle. Last year she also represented her country in the Isle of Man at Commonwealth Youth Games, where she broke a national record.
The other two swimmers are: US based Nicholas Coard who is a National and OECS Record holder and back and freestyle stoker. Coard is the OECS Champion, Carifta bronze medalist, finals in CISC and CCCAN. He has participated in FINA Long Course Swimming World Championships and CAC in 2009. At this Championship, he will be competing in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 50m freestyle.
The third swimmer is Esau Simpson, National and OECS Record holder, just out of the Olympics where he had a fantastic swim, he has represented his country over the years in many world championships. In the region, he was a finalist at Carifta, CISC and CCCAN. His best stroke is freestyle.
“These three young swimmers are very confident, are determined to have great swims, better their times, and to make God and their country very proud,” said the statement from GASA. (LS)
